MAGIC SOLO (FREE)
One of many great plugins from Nitro Man. I love the way this works; when you click the Solo button a temporary layer is created with all its attributes turned off, everything except your selected objects are dynamically added to it, then removed and reassigned to their original layers when you click the button again. Very clean and thorough so you can easily work on a specific selection of objects. It also hides all materials except ones assigned to your solo'd objects!
